10 Frieza's many transformations before he reached his full, final form
SignificantDragon Ball ZVillains in multiple forms are now par for the course in the series, but Frieza is actually the first enemy to start the tradition. Frieza goes through several transformations, and the characters - as well as the audience - have no idea what his most powerful state is. It's taking far too long for Frieza to finally reach his fourth and final form, let alonewhen he has 100% power.
In retrospect, the multiple forms of Frieza seem more likeDragon Ball Zis the way to loosen up the storytelling and not the natural developments. Some of these states, like Frieza's third form, are so trivial that they seem pointless.
9 Goku's journey via the Serpent Way to King Kai's planet
Goku does his best to train consistently under the guidance of a few prolific martial arts mastersDragon Ball Z, but reaching some of these legendary mentors in the first place is usually a challenge in itself. Goku's first death brings with it a glimmer of hope that he can train under King Kai, who eventually teaches him the spirit bomb and the Kaio-ken technique.
The only caveat here is that Goku must complete the Long Serpent Way - a 625,000-mile journey - before reaching King Kai's planet. As a result, Goku was taking a very long time to reach his goal, which could have been optimized in a number of ways.
8 The Fusion Dance Process for Goten & Trunks
Majin Buu is such a phenomenal threat that the typical Super Saiyan 2 highs are still well behind and the heroes have to explore the concept of fusion. Fusion allows two people to combine their strength and skills into one superior fighter. Goku and Vegeta eventually resort to this strategy with the Potara Earrings, which allow for an instant fusion.
RELATED:The 10 Worst Dragon Ball Retcons, Ranked
Goten and Trunks participate in the fusion dance, a precision synchronization exercise.Dragon Ball Zhumorously describes the consequences of being out of sync when fusion dancing, but it's an unnecessary way to prolong that process before actually performing Gotenks' wild payout.
7 The collection of the Namekian Dragon Balls
Dragon Ball Zboldly ventures into uncharted territory as the characters leave the earthly comforts of Earth and fly into space for the first time. The destination of Planet Namek gives Piccolo an opportunity to reconnect with his roots, but the main goal of the journey is to retrieve the Namekian Dragon Balls to undo some of the mistakes made in the past.
The heroes are on a collision course with Vegeta, Frieza and his reinforcementshave plans for the wish-granting balls. Unfortunately, there's just a little too much back and forth here, making acquiring the Dragon Balls feel unnecessary.
6 The arrival of the Saiyans on Earth
Dragon Ball Zcomes full force with its action through the surprise arrival of Raditz, Goku's estranged Saiyan sibling. The defeat of Raditz comes with the ominous warningstronger Saiyans, Nappa and Vegeta, are on their way to Earth. The planet's heroes have one year to prepare for the arrival of the SaiyansDragon Ball ZReally goes into each character's development.
There were other periodsDragon Ball ZA year or even longer is elapsed to optimize the storytelling. However, this is not the case with the early Saiyan invasion.
5 Gohans ultimatives Upgrade-Training
The awakening of Majin Buu brings unprecedented power, leaving Earth's strongest heroes desperate for an advantage against this ancient evil. Gohan's trajectory asDragon Ball ZAfter his defeat of Cell, the hero's protagonist apparently hints that he will be the one to eliminate Buu.
RELATED:The 10 worst writing decisions in Dragon Ball Super
Gohan takes an extended detour to the Sacred World of Kai, where he undergoes training to reach his full potential and receive the ultimate upgrade of Ancient Kai. Gohan has a lot of stupid hurdles to overcome before he's granted this privilege, which all feels even more manipulative considering Ultimate Gohan doesn't even defeat Buu.
4 The time it takes Goku to arrive at Namek
A running trend duringDragon Ball ZStill in its infancy, the supporting heroes are left much of the heavy lifting until Goku arrives to save the day. This formula has its pros and cons, which ultimately depend on how long it takes for Goku to return.
The heroes reach the planet Namek much earlier than Goku, which sends the Saiyan on a solo journey through space while charging thereAccompany his allies on the battlefield. The time it takes Goku to travel through space feels extra long, especially sinceDragon Ball Zhad already turned to the same strategy during the Saiyan invasion.
3 Recruitment for the Tournament of Power
Martial arts competitions have now become an everyday eventDragon Ball, but nobody can compare with itDragon Ball Super'SMultiversal Battle Royale, the tournament of power. This competition gathers the strongest fighters from across the multiverse to go head-to-head in a chaotic free-for-all battle where the price of failure is annihilation from existence.
Great importance is given to the fighters that Goku recruits to represent Universe 7 in the Tournament of Power. Unfortunately, this whole process takes too long, especially since the tournament lasts for dozens of episodes. The recruitment process even creates artificial drama when Goku has to find a last-minute replacement for Buu.
2 The setup for Kid Buu
Dragon Ball ZAudiences have grown accustomed to the notion that each villain will take multiple forms before reaching perfection. Majin Buu is a unique take on this concept as there can be multiple versions of it that become more potent once consumed. The audience is introduced to Buu's introductory form, Evil Buu, and several character-centric versions of Super Buu.
Super Buu is believed to be Buu's strongest state, but that is proven wrong when he transforms into Kid Buu. This whole process feels very much like trial and error. The final fight would be stronger if Kid Buu showed up earlier or if Super Buu was the ultimate state of this majin menace.
1 The last "Five Minutes" of Planet Namek before its destruction
Like many Shonen seriesDragon Ball Zis guilty of the long fill periods that the anime uses to stretch out its narrative, allowing the source manga to continue to progress in its narrative. SomeDragon Ball Z's most outrageous fillercomes from the final act of the great battle between Super Saiyan Goku and Frieza.
Frieza triggers the implosion of the planet Namek and informs Goku that they have five minutes until the planet's demise. The conclusion to this confrontation is fantastic, but more than nine full episodes unfold after Frieza makes that statement.
